kid dates.

Ryan and I spend a lot of time discussing the best ways to spend quality time with our girls. I came up with an idea a couple weeks ago, that I hope to implement with our children for years to come.

There have been more than a few times when Ryan has planned and executed a "daddy-daughter" date and there is nothing the girls would rather do. They anticipate it, they love it and they talk about it non-stop. This so to speak "dating" your children is the perfect opportunity to have one-on-one time with your child and there's no reason a mom shouldn't be included too.

I came across this article, and decided twice a month on the same day, we would alternate girls and each have our very own kid dates. It sounds perfect in theory and I'm hoping the reality is just as perfect.

My favorite kid date from the article: Take a walk.
Kids of any age enjoy fresh air and a nice walk with the folks. If you employ enough adjectives (magic! fairy! adventure!), even the most television-addicted kid, will easily be lured out of doors. My kids and I go on "nature walks which is really just a slow meander around a small forested area near our house.
While these five ideas are great, I'd love to hear from all of you! What are your favorite "kid dates" or ways to spend quality time with your children?

  2. My husband is so busy I go into his notebook and write on his calender once a week where he has a "date" with each of my girls. I write on my blog www.inevergrewup.net once a week about what we do as a family. For the two of them, they have done everything from fishing to going out to eat to just going to her favorite park. I at least once a month will drop off one of my girls at my mother's house and I usually take the other one to a art gallery or museum.

  3. This will TOTALLY work for you guys! For me, it is all about the quiet get-away. Going shopping can be fun, but their little minds instantly start wondering what you will buy them. I like to just BE with them, talk to them. Walks, drives, being home alone while everyone else is gone. Seriously, the one-on-one time is magical. It really is.

  4. That is so funny that I found this post today. I just asked my daughter if she would go with me on a mom-daughter date this week. i am going to take her to a restaurant that she has been begging to go to for months now. We will have a fun meal with dessert and then we are going to pet animals at PetSmart because she loves that. i am so excited that I am not the only one that thinks a date with mom is just as important as a date with dad. She may be with me all day every day, but I don't get the one on one time I crave with her. I can't wait for our little date.

  5. Unfortunately I can't really trade off kids with my husband so I've had to work out a special bath night where one can go take a nice long bath and the other gets to do something fun with just me. It's nice for them to not have that sibling competition thing going on and just to have to one on one. We do the same thing for scriptures only during their shower time I have individual scripture time with each. I had to make a lot of other things that used to happen at that time stop to make this happen, but it's so worth the quiet one on one.

  7. Funny you should write about this topic! I took my daughter to DQ for an ice cream cone this afternoon and it was such a fun memory. We shared a cone and kicked our legs back and forth and laughed a lot. It was a fantastic "sneak peek" into the many special mommy/daughter times that lie ahead of us...

  8. Go to the park and go on the swings, but when it's dark! They never do that, and have them tell you about their day.
